Facebook. Good Or Bad?
By Didar Singh
DIDAR USED THIS PIECE OF PERSUASIVE WRITING AS A SPEECH IN THE FACEBOOK DEBATE THAT HIS TEAM WON. NORMALLY A SPEECH WOULD UTILIZE EXTRA DEVICES.

Many believe, the social network known as ‘Facebook’ is an unsafe, unreliable, unpredictable, inappropriate website. However, others believe it is a useful and secure website. I believe Facebook is great and useful.

Facebook is just trying to help people around the world to connect with each other appropriately and safely. The C.E.O of Facebook has stated: “The thing we are trying to do at Facebook is, just help people connect and communicate more efficiently.” Facebook is just helping people interact with others in different countries.

By using Facebook people are using the power to share their thoughts, and open themselves up safely. If people are depressed and there is no one to talk to and relieve their pain they can use Facebook: they can send a personal message to someone trustable and subdue their pain. Mark Zuckerberg - creator of Facebook has claimed “By giving people the power to share, we’re making the world more transparent.” When someone posts the truth about a lie the government has said to the public, then the community can stand up against the government.

Facebook users are responsible for their own privacy and what they post on Facebook. It is up to the owner of the account to choose their own privacy settings. Co-founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg has asserted “The question isn’t, what do we want to know about people? It’s what do people want to tell about themselves.” Users have the choice of what they want to show other people on their profile.

When people are given a voice and power, the world system heads in the legitimate direction. All this social network is doing, is giving people that voice. Chairperson of Facebook incorporated, Mark Zuckerberg has affirmed “When you give people a voice and give people - power, the system usually ends up in a really good place. So what we view our role as, is giving people that power.” The route to success will only begin with one step at time.

Many Facebook users don’t actually know how to use all of Facebook’s safety features. If people assimilate the skills necessary to to use this social network properly, then their privacy will be safe and they will also be safe. The chairperson, C.E.O, co-founder and creator of Facebook and Facebook incorporated, Mark Zuckerberg has interpreted “People are learning how to use the site and what’s O.K to share. As time goes on, people will learn what’s appropriate, and share accordingly.” In time people will learn what’s appropriate and what’s safe to post.

So, Facebook is not ‘unsafe’ or ‘inappropriate’, as people have claimed. Although people don’t know what is correct to post, there are some people who use the safety features of the site and know what is appropriate and safe to write, post, and share. Therefore I argue ‘for’ Facebook.

Writing To Persuade - Against Facebook
By Jordan Jarman

Every hour there are at least one thousand people scrolling through their Facebook new feeds. Some people believe Facebook is a waste of time and others believe Facebook is a great way to socialize with friends and family. I believe Facebook needs more privacy settings and restrictions and can be harmful.

A harmless 10 minutes on Facebook can turn into hours upon end. A recent study conducted by an American University has revealed that students addicted to Facebook are more likely to get low scores in exams as they are unable to concentrate on their studies. “ My parents pressured me to study hard as a result I have not many friends. I got addicted to Facebook when I went to the U.S on a holiday and it slowly became a problem. Today I find it difficult to stop myself from visiting Facebook every 15 minutes” said Shah, who ended up in therapy for her addiction to Facebook. The ‘World Unplugged’ study, which was conducted in 2011, claims that for some people, quitting social networking sites, ( such as Facebook ) is as difficult as quitting smoking or giving up alcohol”

Facebook also affects relationships negatively at home with family as well as partner relationships. Some kids put Facebook in front of every other consideration and would be more likely to want to be on Facebook than spend time with their families. When these people place themselves away from their families it can turn into fights : “This is almost worse than death, because when they estranged from you, they aren’t gone,” said American, Mary Shelby, 67, whose daughter refused to speak to her for four years.

Similarly, Facebook can effect a relationship with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Jealousy is a key aspect in relationship break-ups influenced by Facebook .Couples come into conflict over everything from what happened at that party with that girl, reconnecting with an ex, to not mentioning the relationship on Facebook at all, reports Jennine Estes, a couples therapist.

Facebook is the worst social networking site for internet trolling. Bullying is now more prevalent online than anywhere else. A study has suggested 87% of teenagers who reported being cyber-bullied said they are targeted on Mark Zuckerburg's site. Soaring numbers of terrified youngsters are seeking help after being cyber bullied by trolls. Calls to ChildLine-type agencies are increasing: “I’ve been a volunteer at ChildLive for 18 months and witnessed a dramatic increase in young people contracting us over cyber-bullying on Facebook” claims Anna William, TV presenter and ChildLine volunteer.

In conclusion, Facebook has caused problems that have affected many people in many different ways. To change this we need to look at the privacy settings and have more restrictions. Facebook should be discouraged so that young people especially can have more balance in their lives and safer social lives.
